Trump is receiving some much deserved praise from conservatives for his first set of executive orders. This has led to charges of hypocrisy from liberals who point back to our earlier criticism of some of Obama’s executive orders. All this proves is that some liberals never listened to what we were saying.
I try to maintain a certain level of decorum here at Explanatory Conservatism, but after I heard that President Obama had commuted Bradley Manning’s sentence, the only thing I could think for about an hour was “WTF?”. Seriously, WTF?
“Loyalty to the country always. Loyalty to the government when it deserves it.” – Mark Twain
There is a false narrative that has been accepted as truth by many on the left. As the story goes, before Obama was even sworn in as president, then Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said he wanted President Obama to fail, and then set out to obstruct all of his proposals as part of a political vendetta. There are numerous problems with this version of history, not least of which is that McConnell didn’t say he wanted Obama to fail before he was sworn in (although Rush Limbaugh did say this). Almost two years later, before the 2010 midterm elections, McConnell did say he wanted to make Obama a one-term president. These two stories are often confused, and then used to begin the narrative of intransigent GOP obstruction.
To hear the more extreme elements on the left tell it, this was downright treasonous. Without going quite so far, even more establishment sections of the left said that “Republicans want Obama to fail more than they want America to succeed.” Valerie Jarrett, senior adviser to President Obama, said that in opposing the president, Republicans were putting their political interests ahead of the country. This is patently absurd. From the conservative point of view, Obama’s policies were harmful to the country.
Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to President Obama, claimed that Obama’s “administration hasn’t had a scandal and he hasn’t done something to embarrass himself.” Really?
- It wasn’t all that long ago we discovered that several VA hospitals were creating fake documents to cover up the fact that the wait to see doctors was so long they were essentially denying care to veterans. This was a major scandal that Obama promised to correct, but has done little about since the headlines went away.
- In 2013 it was discovered that the IRS had been targeting conservative organizations and denying them tax except status. This is not a made up story. Before he did nothing about it, Obama himself said he had “no patience with it. I will not tolerate it.” But no charges were filed or punishment met out. Lois Lerner, who was in charge of the department that targeted conservative groups, was put on paid leave before she eventually retired with full benefits.
